HCS board members approve nearly $23M increase to budget

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County School board members unanimously voted to approve a nearly $23 million increase to the 2014-2015 budget, according to Board Chair Joe Defeo.

"We are in good enough financial shape, the board can vote to borrow without a bond issue," Defeo said, when asked how the increase might affect taxpayers.

He said taxes will not be raised.

Board members approved a $900,000 increase to the North Myrtle Beach Middle School budget. The funding will connect three wings, add hallways and build new classrooms. The final design is expected to be approved in August. A ground-breaking ceremony is scheduled for 2015, Defeo said.

The larger sum of $22 million was approved for the four new middle schools, one of which will be replaced completely.

Board members returned to the drawing board after discovering the former budget plan would not get them through building costs for the new middle schools.
