MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - DHEC stops in restaurants every day to make sure they're following the rules, WMBF News follows up to let you know exactly what they found. This week, it's roaches, in a Conway Applebee's.
Roaches were found in more than one location, including: the back prep, cook line, dish and wait staff areas, according to the Department of Health. The roaches were joined by drain flies, also spotted by DHEC.
This is one of about a dozen violations for the Applebee's on Highway 501.
Dirty equipment was also an issue and food debris was found where it shouldn't be, like on the shelves of the walk-in cooler. The same place uncovered food was found. That violation was corrected during inspection.
WMBF News spoke to the manager of Applebee's, off camera, and he said they fixed all the issues and are waiting for DHEC to return.
When it comes to this Applebee's, one customer has all good things to say.
"It was very delightful, the atmosphere was great, the food was good and all the wait staff was pleasant too," Karen Mays said.
Karen was surprised to hear Applebee's got a score of an 84, which is a B. Her business, The Captain's Chair, is across the street from another place DHEC visited this week, South Beach Creamery.
If you want the scoop on South Beach Creamery, DHEC scored it an A. It lost points for a few issues, such as not properly drying ice cream pans, but all in all, got a 98.
In addition to Applebee's and South Beach Creamery, restaurants in Loris and two more in Myrtle Beach were scored by inspectors.
