HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The number of business licenses issued this year in Horry County is up compared to last year. The top three businesses applying for licenses include: contractors, restaurants, and bars.
Throughout the calendar year, 1,458 new business licenses were issued within the county compared to 1,336 last year. Eight hundred of those were issued since January of 2014.
Since the end of June 2013, more than 400 business licenses have been issued for contractors of any trade. Experts credit the improving real estate market.
"More northeasterners are coming down. More baby-boomers are retiring, and Myrtle Beach is a great place for them to come," said Hal Dixon,the co-owner of Flagship Construction.
Opening its doors back in the 1990s, Dixon said Flagship Construction welcomes the new competition.
"When the economy was so bad, we did have a hard time finding some subcontractors. So, it is helping having them in our market," he explained.
While contractors remain the number one growing business, the list also includes restaurants and bars. Over the last calendar year, 75 business licenses were issued for those companies.
Opening in January of 2014, Which Wich said settling down in Horry County was the perfect recipe for success.
"After looking at Myrtle Beach property and North Myrtle, this location made a lot of sense. It's got a good anchor, a lot of traffic with Highway 544, Highway 17, and Ocean Lakes being one of the largest campgrounds on the East coast," said General Manager Jordan Perili.
The franchise is already applying for another business license with plans to open another sandwich shop in October in North Myrtle Beach.
