RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Raleigh man captured video Thursday of what appeared to be a fireball falling from the sky over the Triangle.

Dan Perjar, a software developer at North Carolina State University, captured the 4-second video of the possible meteor with his dash cam installed in his car. He said the video was shot while he was driving on I-440 from Cary toward N.C. State.

The American Meteor Society says it received more than 95 reports of the meteor from people in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware West Virginia, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.

An AMS user in Selma identified as Jason B. said the fireball "was bright enough to ruin our night vision for a moment."

"It started off like a normal shooting star, turned orange/red (streamlined) and then turned extremely bright green with many fragments breaking off," he wrote. "It made it very low on the horizon (also its brightest point) before being obscured by the distant tree line."

Alex K., an AMS user from Concord, N.C., described the possible meteor as "the most interesting one I've ever seen."

"It was green, flashed as if parts were combusting or breaking off, and the trail was green as well," he wrote.

The AMS reports came in between 9:15 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. on Thursday. The time code on Perjar's video indicates he captured to fireball around 10:17 p.m.
