NC Sen. Hagan talking on contraception legislation

Posted: Updated:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan is speaking out with abortion-rights activists at her side to promote legislation seeking to override a Supreme Court ruling last month on birth control.

Hagan was scheduled to hold a Raleigh news conference Friday with Planned Parenthood members to discuss a bill she helped introduce but failed to advance in Washington this week.

The measure seeks to ensure contraception access for women who get their health insurance from companies with religious objections to forms of birth control. The Supreme Court ruled closely held companies aren't required to pay for some contraception, citing religious freedom.

Hagan is running for re-election this year. Planned Parenthood's national president has said its political arm would spend $3 million on voter mobilization in hopes of helping Hagan.
