RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina's governor says he plans to review the process for naming a poet laureate after the state's established writers criticized his selection of a woman who has self-published two books of poetry.

At a news conference Wednesday, Gov. Pat McCrory said he was unaware that previous governors had used a process through the N.C. Arts Council to choose a poet laureate, although those guidelines once were on the council's website.

The guidelines were removed at some point, and the website maintained by the new poet laureate, Valerie Macon of Fuquay-Varina, also isn't working.

McCrory said he chose Macon from poets that his staff recommended. While he says he'll review that selection process, he also said he wants to provide opportunities to people who aren't part of "elite groups."
