New charges against former NC bombing manager

Posted: Updated:

MANNS HARBOR, N.C. (AP) - The federal government has dropped theft charges but is now charging the former manager of a bombing range in eastern North Carolina with taking $334,000 in kickbacks.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reports (http://bit.ly/1snMWEfiA ) that prosecutors say Harry C. Mann took the money from metal recycling companies and others for scrap metal from the Navy's Dare County bombing range.

The government says it is no longer pursuing earlier charges that Mann stole government property worth $6.7 million.

Mann's attorney said Tuesday his client did not take any bribes and was carrying out government orders to get rid of junk in remote parts of the range.

Elliot Abrams says his client was told if he could do it without charges to the government, he could keep the material taken away.
