NC horse owner facing animal cruelty charges

CLINTON, N.C. (AP) - A Sampson County woman is facing multiple counts of animal cruelty after 54 malnourished horses were found in a pasture.

The Fayetteville Observer reports ( Sgt. Jessica Kittrell said Tammie Michelle Montiel, who said she lived in Cumberland County, is charged with 18 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty,

The horses were discovered in June after deputies responded to a call of horses running loose in Plain View. Kittrell said deputies discovered the horses, all in various states of malnutrition, at the pasture. She said 17 horses were immediately seized, but Montiel was allowed to keep the remaining 37 horses. Those horses were seized July 1, along with nine ducks, five chickens and nine guineas.

Montiel's is free on $5,000 bail. It's not known if she has an attorney.
