NC Senate urged to pass bill on autism therapy

Posted: Updated:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Advocates for people with autism want state senators to vote on a bill that would extend insurance coverage for autism therapy in North Carolina.

The group Autism Speaks lobbied senators Tuesday, calling on them to support a bill that would extend insurance for Applied Behavior Analysis therapy.

The House passed a bill last year that required all state regulated health plans to cover the treatment. The state employee health plan added it earlier this year.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, the state's largest insurance company, opposes the measure, saying it will increase health care costs. The provider has been running newspaper ads against the law.

Liz Feld, president of Autism Speaks, says those ads have not been truthful and has sent the company a letter asking for coverage.
