GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) -

Opening statements got under way Thursday in the trial of a Gaston County wrestling coach.

Gary Goins, 46, is charged with 22 felony counts of sex crimes against minors. He is denying the accusations against him.

Goins' charges include indecent liberties with a child, indecent liberties with a student and statutory rape/sex offense of a child six years old or older.

On June 6, 2013, he was also charged with two counts of crimes against nature.

The alleged incidents occurred between May 1, 1999 and June 15, 2004.

Goins was employed as a teacher and coach at East Gaston High School.

He taught earth & environmental science, earth & environmental science honors and physical science.  He was also the school's wrestling coach, according to the school system at the time.

One victim is listed as under the age of 16 when the incidents reportedly happened from May 1999 until September 1999.

A second victim is listed on the report as a 15-year-old boy.  He was reportedly victimized from August 2003 until June 2004.

In his defense, Goins' lawyer says his client didn't have inappropriate contact with the alleged victims and said one of the alleged victims invited Goins to his wedding.

The state says Goins slept in the bed with one alleged victim during a travel tournament.

Prosecutors says he also inappropriately touch one victims while he was sleeping and made younger team members dress up with makeup and pose in sexual positions while he took pictures of them.

It was determined that the three alleged victims will all testify in one single trial.
