Company given 30 days for NC cleanup plan

Posted: Updated:

ARDEN, N.C. (AP) - An electronics company has been given a month to develop plans to clean up around an old plant in western North Carolina.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported ( that CTS Corp. has until Aug. 11 to submit plans to the Environmental Protection Agency for the old plant in Arden.

Officials say there are polluted springs and a plume of tainted groundwater under the site.

CTS made electronic parts at the plant for decades before closing in 1986. Chemicals from the plant have been found in high concentrations in the soil and groundwater.

The EPA conducted a voluntary evacuation of 13 people living near the plant because of unsafe pollutant levels in air vapor. Samantha Urquhart-Foster with the EPA says the agency hopes to allow the people to return to their homes.
