ST. MARYS, Ga. (AP) - The crew of the Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team Kings Bay has a new commander.

The Coast Guard said in a news release that Cmdr. Matthew Baer handed over command of the unit to Lt. Cmdr. Eric Casper during a change of command ceremony Friday.

Baer also marked 20 years of Coast Guard service Friday. He's leaving Georgia to head to the Coast Guard Special Missions Training Center in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

The unit was commissioned on Oct. 6, 2003. Congress authorized its formation in direct response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The unit has a tactical force of 74 active duty personnel. It performs a variety of ports, waterways and coastal security, law enforcement and humanitarian missions.
