RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Gov. Pat McCrory has appointed a new poet laureate for North Carolina.

The governor's office announced Friday that Valeria Macon will be the state's new poet laureate. She succeeds Joseph Bathanti in the 2-year position.

Macon has lived in the state 35 years and has published several books of poetry, including Shelf Life, portrays the joys and the sorrows of life.

She now lives in Fuquay-Varina.

In her new role, Macon will likely work on a long-term project and travel across the state to speak about poetry and work with writers.

The title of North Carolina's poet laureate was first established in 1935 and calls for poet laureates to have deep connections to the culture of the state and with a history of literary excellence.
