BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Deputies with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office arrested a man from Supply early Thursday morning in what officials said was the biggest heroin bust in county history.

During a news conference Thursday afternoon, Brunswick County officials said Kevin Jermaine Hankins, 32, was pulled over around 2 a.m. for a traffic violation on Highway 17 near the Waterford community. Hankins then fled as officers approached the vehicle, leading them on a chase through the county.

Troopers performed a PIT maneuver on Hankins' vehicle to end the chase near the intersection of Highway 17 North and Green Hill Road.

Officials said the 8000 bindles of heroin, worth $160,000, found inside Hankins' vehicle is the largest heroin seizure in Brunswick County history.

Hankins was arrested and charged with:

  • Trafficking opium or heroin
  • Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and/or deliver heroin
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Flee/elude arrest with/ motor vehicle (felony)
  • Reckless driving to endanger
  • Speeding

Hankins is currently being held in the Brunswick County Detention Center on a $760,000 secured bond.

Officials say they investigated Hankins for nearly a year and that the investigation is still ongoing and more arrests are expected.
