ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Most Buncombe County employees are getting an extra day and a half of vacation because one office closed during a snow storm earlier this year.
County commissioners on Tuesday approved the extra vacation time for most of the county's 1,400 workers because the register of deeds closed his office during the snowstorm Feb. 12 and 13.
The county has a policy that offices never close, though workers can use vacation time or go without pay during bad weather.
Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger told his workers to stay home, meaning they could not have worked if they wanted to do so.
County officials say the extra time off gives other employees the same benefits that the register of deeds employees had. Reisinger has apologized for the confusion.
