LORIS, SC (WMBF) - A police chase overnight ended in a fiery crash on Prospect Road in Loris.
Just after midnight early Thursday, Tim and Margo Cox woke up to a loud noise they thought was lightning. They say when they looked out their window to check, they saw something they would never expect to be in their front yard: a car on fire.
The police chase began in Columbus County, North Carolina and ended in Loris, South Carolina. Police say 34-year-old Travis Walters of Green Sea, SC did not stop for a license check.
Police followed him as he sped down Prospect Road.
Tim Cox says police on the scene of the crash told him they clocked him at 140mph.
After losing control, authorities say Walters hit multiple trees in Cox's front yard.
"He hit the first tree and then his driver's side door hit the second tree and it ricocheted off of it, and his lights were actually pointing south and he came in from the east," Cox says.
Authorities say he was trapped in the vehicle and had to be airlifted out by helicopter.
As of now, we do not know Walters' condition, but Cox heard authorities say he was unresponsive.
SCHWP filed a charge of driving too fast for conditions.
