TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WMBF) - A petition has been started for a nude-friendly beach on a Georgia island.
Shawn Williams started the petition for the clothing-optional beach on Tybee Island. He says the beach would be family-friendly, as well as the nude portion.
Williams has stocked up on all kinds of literature since he started his petition. He has a Facebook page -- brochures and the naturist's code of family values.
Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman said he won't support the idea.
"It has no chance of happening, as long as I'm mayor. That will not happen on Tybee, for as long as I am mayor of this community," Buelterman protested. "We appreciate him taking an active interest in this and his petition, but we are a family-friendly beach and we plan on keeping it that way."
Within one month, nearly 900 signatures have been added to the petition.
Mayor Buelterman doesn't seem to be budging on his stance, but Williams believes his petition holds real power -- with 861 signatures and counting.
Williams said the issue is about freedom and personal rights, from the beginning. He has contacted groups from across the country to help give him the boost he needs.
