Durham woman indicted in son's shooting death

Posted: Updated:

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - A grand jury has handed up indictments charging a Durham woman with manslaughter, felony child abuse and other misdemeanors in the April shooting death of her 9-year-old son.

A statement from the Durham Police Department says 36-year-old Amy Suzanne Pittman was indicted for voluntary manslaughter, felony child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and failure to store firearms to protect minors.

Police say officers were dispatched to shooting call at a home on April 28. When they arrived, they found her 9-year-old son dead of a gunshot wound.

Investigators determined that the shooting was an accident. Three children were in the home when the shooting occurred, but Amy Pittman was not there.

Pittman is being held under a $151,000 bond. It's not known if she has an attorney.
