NC House makes concession on lottery advertising

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A proposal by North Carolina House Republicans to expand state lottery advertising spending to generate more profits for education appears to be off the table.

Chief House budget negotiator Rep. Nelson Dollar of Cary told senators Wednesday that future budget compromise offers would no longer contain an additional $30 million from the lottery. The money would come from doubling the cap on lottery advertising expenses. House Republicans also wanted to limit ad content and prohibit lottery ads or sponsorships with universities at the same time. The House would stop pushing for those changes, too.

Senators opposed the combination and preferred the status quo.

The concession helped move budget negotiations along after contentious meetings Wednesday morning. Senators planned to huddle later Wednesday to generate another budget offer.
