Council settles on company to manage Whispering Pines Golf Course

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – With new direction, Myrtle Beach will finally move forward with Atlantic Golf Management to oversee the Whispering Pines Golf Course.

The city is adamant in not putting another cent into the course; the new management company promises to make the course profitable and give back a percentage of those profits to the city.

Atlantic Golf Management is represented by Chip Smith. He has lived in the community for over 30 years, with over 20 years of experience in the golf industry.

Currently, he owns TPC after acquiring it 8 years ago.

"It's the only 5-star course locally on Golf Digest. We're really proud of that," said Smith. He adds, "I think I've proven that I can make a course successful. I look forward to doing the same thing with Whispering Pines and making it something we can all be proud of."

Immediately, Smith wants to start working at the golf course even before a contract is drafted up.

"The main thing is to clean it up. It needs some TLC. The course…the layout is in the top 50 percent for the area, it is really good," said Smith.

Smith also offered to pay the entire $22,700 lease for the driving range. He has no doubt in his mind the range and the course can both be profitable.
