MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – With the large influx of visitors to the Grand Strand for Independence Day, law enforcement is cracking down on drinking.
Police around Myrtle Beach have made 39 alcohol related arrests since Thursday night.
Lifeguards say alcohol consumption on the beach has been high and that day drinking creates more problems at night.
Deputies warn people that with Independence Day falling on a Friday, visitors have an extra day to consume too much alcohol during the day causing them to make bad decisions at night.
They also say the large amount of cars on the road make drunk driving even more dangerous.
"My family, everybody's family, deserves the right to be on these highways and not have to worry about an intoxicated driver, and so that's what we're hoping for this weekend," said Sergeant Jeff Benton of the Horry County Sheriff's Office.
Benton asks anyone who has been drinking to stay off the road, and if you see a dangerous driver, alert troopers by dialing, *HP.
