MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - More lifeguards have been brought in by Lack's Beach Services to help on Myrtle Beach, due to rip currents brought by Tropical Storm Arthur. The first responders will be assisting with water or land emergencies.

Like most 9-year-olds, Madison Mccall wants to ride the waves, but even she has noticed a difference in their strength.

"The waves were smooth and calm and steady, and I like to surf in calm waves," McCall said about her favorite waves to surf.

On Wednesday, there was nothing calm about the waves in Myrtle Beach.

"It's major and people are wiping out," McCall said about the waves.

Arthur could be to blame according to lifeguards who are already seeing pockets of rip currents out in the water.

Along with lifeguards, Madison's family is also watching the violent waves.

"We are watching the current to make sure they're not getting drifted out. We are watching extra close, but we always do anyways," Jolene McCall explained

Lifeguards are on high alert for rip currents all the way into the weekend with conditions likely worsening as the system gets closer.

"The next few days with the high influx of people and this storm lingering around we are going to be high risk for water issues," Hannah Houston said. She works with Lack's Beach Services.

And even though at times the water may look calm, it doesn't mean it is underneath the waves.

‘Because when the tide is falling that's when the rips are open that's when the water is the most dangerous," Houston explained.

For families like the McCalls, Arthur isn't going to ruin their time, but it is something they'll keep an eye out for.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
