CALABASH, NC (WMBF) – If you take a trip out to Meadowlands Golf Club in Calabash, you will likely notice something out of the ordinary.
"We're getting a lot of double takes," said Jason Monahan, General Manager of the course.
Those heads are turning because of the new way he and his kids have been utilizing the course. The golf market in the Grand Strand is so congested and business has been rough lately, so Monahan figured he'd try something new.
"We needed to find a niche or something special that would draw attention and draw customers to the course," Monahan said.
The solution that Monahan decided on was footgolf, and it's exactly what it sounds like. It's played just like golf but with a soccer ball and your own two feet.
Monahan coaches soccer and works for the golf course so he says the sport was a no brainer.
"The marriage of the two sports can allow us to bring a much larger clientele to the golf course," explained Monahan.
He also believes it's a way to target the hardest demographic for golf courses; kids. He says it will get them on the course more and could eventually be a good way to introduce them to golf
"We're hoping by getting these youngsters out here, getting them out to play footgolf, that we can then in turn, as they grow and age, we can turn those rounds of foot golf into golf rounds," Monahan said.
