WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

A mother and grandmother are charged with child abuse after leaving an infant alone in a car Sunday afternoon.

According to Officer G.J. Norris of the Wilmington Police Department, the child's mother, Noelle Rafferty, and the child's grandmother, Tamala Hiteshaw, went into the Dollar Tree on South College Road and left a 7-month-old boy in a van.

New Hanover County Dispatch received calls about the child at 3:47 p.m. Police arrived on scene at 3:52 p.m.

Officials said officers contacted the mother and grandmother once they were on scene. Officials said the pair did not realize the child was in the vehicle and rushed out of the store to unlock the car and turn on the air conditioning.

Both Rafferty and Hiteshaw are charged with child abuse.

The child was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center to be evaluated. He has been released with no injuries.
