Hole in road shuts down Socastee Swing Bridge

Posted: Updated:

SOCASTEE, SC (WMBF) - The Socastee swing bridge on Dick Pond Road is still closed Wednesday morning, from Socastee Boulevard to the swing bridge. SCDOT will check out the sinkhole at some point Wednesday.

The bridge will be opened for boat traffic, but cars will not be allowed to go across the bridge, Cpl. Sonny Collins said. As of now, the bridge is closed off and turned the other way so people cannot walk across either.

A hole, about two feet in diameter, is the cause for the road closure. The intracoastal waterway water can be seen through the hole. Local Businesses say someone noticed the hole just before the bridge around 4:30 p.m.

You'll need to use Highway 17 and Highway 544 to avoid the road closure.

We talked with the Horry County Schools Transportation director and he says all of the buses for Socastee area schools will use another route, and it will add on a little delay.
