Divas Half Marathon draws thousands to North Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - On Sunday morning, thousands of people made their way through North Myrtle Beach for what might be the most glamorous half marathon and 5K.

The 13.1 mile stretch gives the Divas a glimpse of what the Grand Stand has to offer. It's the third year in a row the Divas Half Marathon and 5K made it to our area, and it draws people from all over the county.

Organizers say almost 90 percent of participants come from out of town.

The Divas Half-Marathon and 5K events are held at some of the most popular vacation destinations. North Myrtle Beach is one of the 10 chosen. Some other locations runners will be traveling to are San Francisco Bay, CA, Long Island, NY and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Last year, more than 15,000 people came to support more than 5,000 runners. This year, many of the local restaurants, shops and hotels were packed with thousands of people visiting.

Runners who chose to come to our area to participate in this marathon say they came because of the beautiful scenery, but beyond that, they wanted to get across this message.

Katrina Buchanan says, "It's health, it's friendship, it's being one and coming together and helping other ladies and encouraging everybody to finish their race."

This marathon is about making everybody feel like they're a winner. As soon as the runners cross the finish line, they receive a rose and a glass of champagne to celebrate. Organizers say they continue to see this event grow.

The event is a huge win, not just for participants, but for tourism and business in the area.
