Drive N Live event to show teen drivers the dangers of distracted driving

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Drive N Live is an event that gives teen drivers a chance to hands-on experience the dangers of distracted driving.

The event is happening Saturday, April 26.

Lance Corporal Felix Cruz with Horry County Police Department said he wants teens to see the real dangers that come from driving while distracted.

"We don't want any of our teen drivers to get hurt, or get killed or hurt other people on the road as well," Cruz said.

Police departments across our area are joining forces to show teens what can happen when they're not fully focused on driving.  Horry County Police, Myrtle Beach Police, South Carolina Highway Patrol, Surfside Police, Horry County Sheriff and Conway Police Departments are hosting the event for the first time.

Teens, ages 14 to 18, will put on "drunk goggles", rev up the go carts and ride through a course to see how dangerous it is to drive under the influence.

Police have designated each cone hit to represent a person or another car.

Police say when the young drivers remove the goggles and see the damage - it leaves a lasting impact, showing the real effects of drinking and driving.

A second course will show drivers the impact of texting while driving.

A study shows more than 75 percent of young adults say they're confident they can successfully text and drive.

Police want to prove them wrong by putting them through the course, to stress, staying off the phone is the difference between life and death.

"Here in the course, it's only cones; in real life it could be a person, it could be another vehicle so we want them to understand to be safe because its dangerous out on the road so we want them to be safe," Cruz said.

Aside from being a learning experience, the event is free. Young drivers can hop in a car at the NASCAR SpeedPark starting at 8 a.m. Saturday.  Parents must sign in teens.
