Seniors and businesses benefit from new 'Senior Sample Days'

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The City of Myrtle Beach is working on a new program called Senior Sample Days which begins in May. It is something the city, along with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, is trying to get our local businesses involved in.

The idea is that businesses will offer a special deal and in return, their business will be designated the Senior Sample Day's deal of that month, and be featured on, which is not yet live.

"The idea behind Senior Sample Days is that it's a really special promotion designed to serve the senior community," says Mark Kruea, spokesman for the City of Myrtle Beach. "But also to help the business during what would normally be a slow period for the business."

The last Census shows that more than one out of every four people in Myrtle Beach is 55 or older. Senior Sample Days would give a large portion of the area's population a chance to do something fun and different on a budget.

The deals advertised, Kruea says, will be greater than 50 percent off the normal price. The first featured attraction, this May, will be Wonderworks by Broadway at the Beach.  They are offering admission to people starting at age 55 for $9.99.

"Ideally, we'll end up with a website that will offer not just the Senior Sample Days discounts, but also give the business community as a whole a chance to list all of their senior citizen discounts for the area," Kruea says. And for the seniors themselves, "If you're a senior citizen and you want to know if a particular business offers a discount, you would be able to go to that website and see what those discounts might be."

It's also a great opportunity for businesses. "From the business perspective, they get the designation of being part of Senior Sample Days, but they also get the extra traffic that the Senior Sample Days discount will bring into their business during whatever slow period is," Kruea explained.

The idea is that businesses will sign up for a month that would be beneficial to them. "Not all businesses have the same needs at each time of the year," Kruea said. "So this allows the business to pick when it would be most convenient for them to offer this great deal for seniors."
