Coroner identifies 2nd person killed by Garden City house fire

GARDEN CITY, SC (WMBF) – Two people died and five people were sent to the hospital after a fire at a three-story house in Garden City, officials confirmed.

The victim of the fire was 38-year-old Melissa Lamb from Timmonsville, confirmed Tamara Willard with the Horry County Coroner's Office. Lamb died at the scene at about 4 a.m.

Joel Lamb, Jr., 48 years old from Timmonsville area died Monday at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler said the man didn't die from the fire, but from injuries sustained from the fall. Lamb jumped from an upper level to escape the fire.

Fire crews from Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Rescue and Horry County Fire Rescue responded to the home on Calhoun Drive Sunday morning.

In addition to Lamb, four children also jumped from the second level of the home to escape the flames, according to Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Rescue Assistant Chief J.R. Haney.

Two children have been discharged from the hospital, two remain in stable condition at a pediatric center, officials confirmed Monday.

A neighbor said he woke up to what he thought was fireworks, and jumped into action.

"Fire was already consuming the car beneath the house," he said. "So we assumed it was going to explode. We just tried to get the guy out of the way. We didn't know if we were going to try to do anything, but we couldn't, because the fire was already on all three levels of the house.

The intensity of the fire was a challenge for firefighters, Haney said. Even though they had a relatively short response time, because of such a large fire load, any type of search and rescue was delayed slightly because crews had to first get those flames under control.

A family member was involved in a traffic accident in Aynor while he was on his way to the hospital to check on those involved in the fire, HCFR officials confirmed. Emergency crews responded and transported the man to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. He has since been treated and released.

Authorities believe the house is a vacation home or a second home for the families.

Arson investigators and emergency responders remained on scene, and Calhoun Drive was blocked off Saturday morning. The cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation.

Several people were injured after jumping from windows during a separate fire at a condo in Murrells Inlet Saturday morning. Read more about that incident here:
