FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - An event to raise awareness about equine rescues and animal shelters is scheduled this month.

The Florence Area Humane Society will be celebrating the national Help a Horse Day, designated by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, on Saturday, April 26.

The event will be held at the Jayne H. Boswell Animal Shelter on McCurdy Road in Florence, from noon until 4:00 p.m. It is open to everyone in the community.

Children, age 10 and under, have the chance to get a picture with a pony. Horseshoe decorating and other crafts will be on site for kids. Foster families will share their experience with rehabilitating horses and explain ways to save them from starving.

In press release issued by the humane society, the day is for equine rescues and animal shelters to raise awareness about the lifesaving work they do year-round to care for at-risk horses in their community who have been abused or neglected.
