Crews battle blaze in Bennettsville

Posted: Updated:

BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - A particle board plant fire kept crews on scene for more than seven hours.

Bennettsvile Fire crews responded to a fire at Flakeboard plant around 7:30 a.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Steven McDaniel. The plant is located on Highway 912.

Crews from six fire departments helped put out the fire.

No injuries were reported.

Employees were evacuated from the building.

McDaniel said the fire started from some duct work that runs through the plant.

Bennettsville Fire crews returned to their station around 2:50 p.m.

McDaniel said fire crews were on the scene for so long due to the amount of clean up.

He said there was a lot of sawdust in the air ducts, and it took a while to clean up. Crews also had to examine any remaining sources of heat that may re-kindle the fire.

The plant produces particle board and other types of composite wood panel.

According to its website, Flakeboard offers the widest selection of composite wood panel products in the industry to North America.
