BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A Brunswick County jury found Richard Grissett guilty Thursday of the 2012 murder of Linnie Mae Ward.

Detectives say Ward was found dead in her home on Gwynn Road in Longwood on November 13, 2012.  A deputy found her body when he was met by a relative of Ward's who was at her home to check on her.

The sheriff's office said the autopsy revealed Ward died from strangulation and blunt force trauma to the face.

Deputies recovered rifle in a pond at Grissett's home that he had taken from Ward.

Authorities arrested Richard Grisset, 53, and charged him with first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Officials said Grissett and Ward lived 10 minutes apart and that they knew of each other, but didn't have daily contact.

Grisset was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
