When you make major changes to a major event you take a big risk. However, it looks like the change in Darlington was the right decision.
Many people say Darlington is NASCAR's version of the NFL's Lambeau Field. That's a major compliment and proves that this race is certainly special for fans and drivers. Tweaking something so successful and revered is always a gamble. But change can also lead to more excitement and opportunity.
NASCAR and the team at Darlington Raceway shifted the Southern 500 about a month earlier from its longtime May Mother's Day weekend to this coming weekend. The race is a big deal for area businesses and normally provides an economic impact of more than $50 million. But with the weather shaping up so nicely for this new date, the impact this year could be even bigger than years past.
Although the race hasn't happened, it surely looks like it was a wise decision to make this move. Good luck and congratulations to the folks in Darlington. Hopefully this weekend's race will be one for the record books and this earlier April date will find a permanent spot on the NASCAR schedule.
