MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – There is a major road closure Wednesday morning: the intersection of Pine Island Road and Highway 15 will be closed down until further notice.
Since so many cars use this intersection every day, engineers are expecting more traffic. A lot of people use this route as a shortcut to get to the mall or to the airport. Crews will be out early, but they don't expect to fully close the road until 7 a.m. This will last pretty much most of the day, or until they get the job done. They want everyone to just avoid the area if they possibly can.
"We're asking that people heed the signs, follow the message boards and take the posted detour routes," said SCDOT construction engineer Anna Levy.
This will be the biggest closure at this intersection, but it's just a small part of the overall project. On Wednesday, SCDOT is working on drainage issues, but the focus is on ultimately adding a stoplight. There will be a crosswalk at the intersection, as well as turn signals with the actual signal mastheads that will be there. At the most, the construction engineer says we will see flaggers and one-lane closures, so it should only get better from here.
Area drivers think this is a safe solution to the problem in the area.
"I would imagine it would be," said Matthew Shingledecker. "Everybody would have a turn, you know. But it's such a heavy traffic area, but I think it would help."
The completion date is scheduled for this coming August, but it will depend on the type of weather we have as well as the amount of traffic in the area.
