Moped crash closes down Hwy 501, sends 2 to the hospital

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - An early morning crash between a van and a moped shut down a section of Highway 501 and sent two men to the hospital.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, around 2:10 a.m. Sunday on Highway 501 over the Old Waccamaw Potter Bridge, Rich Wilson was driving a 2001 Ford Van in the northbound lane.

Troopers believe a vehicle in front of Wilson quickly made a lane change and Wilson did not have time to brake, slamming into a moped in front of him.

The moped was driven by 24 year old Damien Blankenbaker with 28 year old DeAngre Clay as a passenger. Both were rushed to the hospital.

SCHPD believes Blankenbaker is now at home recovering and that Clay remains in the hospital.

Wilson and his passenger were both wearing seatbelts and were uninjured, but SCHP says Wilson is now facing charges for driving too fast for conditions.
