Pelicans fall to Red Sox in season opener

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans opened the 2014 season with a loss to the defending Carolina League champion Salem Red Sox, falling by a 10-3 final on Thursday night at Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Hanser Alberto and Odubel Herrera each collected two hits for Myrtle Beach.

The Salem Red Sox jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Pelicans tied it back up on a Joey Gallo sac fly in the bottom half of the frame. Salem jumped back out in front in the second, and took a commanding lead in the third when Ryan Dent hit a grand slam over the left field fence. Dent had 5 RBI on the night for the Red Sox.

Brian Johnson took the win, while Myrtle Beach's Victory Payano was saddled with the loss. The Red Sox and Pelicans resume their four game series tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
