MARION, SC (WMBF) - As Latta softball settled in for a doubleheader against Marion earlier this week, Cora Owens reminded her team and others of their expectations this year - to get back to the Lower State finals, and beyond.
"It's been good so far," Owens said. "We've lost two or three games, but I think we'll come back from it."
If there's one thing Owens and Latta softball have, it's bounceback mentality. After losing to Lake View earlier this week, the Vikings came through and took down the Swamp Foxes with ease. Yet for this Viking standout, her love for athletics goes beyond playing.
"I do volunteer, I coach at the Latta rec (center)," she said. "I coach basketball, ages ten, 11 and 12. I love it, and when I go back each year and see the kids are getting better and better I just feel like I've been a part of that."
Next year, she's bound for Coker to get on the diamond even more, but won't forget how important her time has been playing for Latta.
"I'll miss the sports, obviously, and I'm just going to miss being a leader, and being able to go through with all my friends what we've been through and all of our accomplishments," Owens said.
But the goal for now is to remain focused on winning a state title in the coming months for the Vikings.
