CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A South Carolina man has been charged after Charlotte police connected him to a cold case rape from 1980.

According to Charlotte police, 52-year-old Timothy Ray Benfield is facing rape charges for the 1980 rape of a woman in University City.

Police say the woman was asleep in her apartment along the 9700 block of University City Boulevard when she was awakened by a man standing over her bed with a knife. This happened on July 6, 1980.

The man then reportedly sexually assaulted the woman and took several items from the inside her apartment. After he left the woman called police and was taken to the hospital where a sexual assault kit was done.

In March 2011, Timothy Benfield was listed as one of Myrtle Beach Police Department's "Most Wanted" for breaking into a vehicle.

On December 13, 2008, Myrtle Beach police responded to a report of a break-in of a 1991 Jeep Cherokee and found the driver rear vent window smashed out.

Blood was found on the window, which was then collected by a crime scene specialist and sent to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. An analysis found the blood was a match for Benfield.

In October 2013, a match to the DNA taken after the 1980 rape as found in South Carolina and identified as Benfield.

According to jail records, Benfield was arrested in Horry County in South Carolina last Thursday. He waived extradition.

Jail officials in Horry County say he was released from the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Wednesday morning around 10:30 a.m. to the custody of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

He was brought back to Mecklenburg County.

He will be charged with 1st degree Rape, 1st degree Sex Offense, 1st degree Burglary, 2nd degree Kidnapping and Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

Police say they have notified the victim in the case and she has been involved in the proceedings of this case.
