Horry County votes to partner with Dillon County for project

Posted: Updated:

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County council members are in favor of teaming with Dillon County for the sake of the startup company, StarTek.

StarTek is a call center, customer support company set to bring 600 jobs to Horry County.

The vote to pass the ruling means the council is helping them grow by giving them a roughly 25 percent reduction on building and new equipment taxes for the first 20 years.

In exchange, StarTek will negotiate a fee, instead of the tax increase.

This allows a business to negotiate a fee instead of the tax increasing if the value of property goes up.

Chairman Mark Lazarus says the council has given a similar deal to PTR and other companies.

Dillon County gets a fraction of proceeds from that piece of property, because state law requires another county partner for this type of project.

The deal requires two more readings before it is final.
