Horry County passes second reading to ban beach tent

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - In a 10-1 vote, Horry County council members voted to pass a ban on beach tents in its second reading.

If passed in the next and final reading, this would ban beach tents measuring more than 7.5 feet in diameter, year round.

"This has been a growing problem for years", said Councilman Marion Foxworth. "We attempted to keep them legal and regulated back in 2011, and it just hasn't worked."

Although Foxworth said Horry County wasn't driving this issue, it has been quite a hot topic this year.

North Myrtle Beach passed a beach tent ban this year along with the city of Myrtle Beach.

If beach tents are banned in Horry County, the three remaining tent-friendly beaches will be in Briarcliffe Acres, Atlantic and Surfside.
