KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

A K-9 officer with the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office has died after she was run over by a vehicle Sunday.

The Sheriff's Office says as a result of the accident, bloodhound officer Corley needed costly, invasive surgery. Corley died during surgery Monday afternoon.

"I regret to say that K9 Corley died this afternoon while under sedation for a CT scan," stated a post on the Kershaw County Sheriff's Department's Facebook page. "Her injury was too severe and caused too much damage to her heart. Thanks for all the phone calls and offers of financial support."

Sheriff Jim Matthews says a majority of the K-9 operations are supported by public donations. A plea for funds was made on the department's Facebook page.

Matthews had hoped the surgery would allow the bloodhound to recover.

The circumstances behind the accident have not been made public.
