COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – New details are emerging that may have caused a man from Jacksonville to lead police on a car chase ending with him being shot multiple times.
A spokeswoman for the SBI said 60-year-old George Evans shot his 57-year-old ex-wife, Audrey Evans, in the parking lot of the Olive Garden in Jacksonville. NBC affiliate WITN reports Audrey had taken out a domestic violence protection order against George.
According to District Attorney Jon David, George Reynolds Evans, of Jacksonville, was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center after officials said he tried to run away from police and was shot by multiple law enforcement officers from the State Highway Patrol and Columbus County Sheriff's Office.
Three Highway Patrol troopers and six deputies with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office who were part of an officer involved shooting on US74/76 between Chauncey Road and Old Lake Road Sunday have been placed on administrative leave, as part of standard protocol.
As of Tuesday, hospital officials said George Evans was upgraded from critical to serious condition. WITN reports Audrey Evans was last listed in stable condition after being shot.
The chase and shooting
According to Highway Patrol, officials tried to pull Evans over around 2:15 p.m. on US701 just south of Whiteville. Evans refused to stop and led authorities on a chase.
Officials said the vehicle eventually traveled onto US74/76 towards Wilmington before stopping in the median. At that point, Highway Patrol said Evans got out of the vehicle and showed a weapon, and that's when officers opened fire.
District Attorney Jon David held a press conference Sunday evening where he didn't talk about the facts of the case, but shed new light on the judicial process moving forward.
David said that Evans will likely face multiple offenses including aggravated felony to elude arrest among others. The State Bureau of Investigation is the lead investigating agency into this shooting incident.
"It is vital to the administration of justice that we have an outside independent review take place anytime we have an officer involved shooting," said David. "That's part of my protocol which I regard as the best practice in our state."
Evans also faces attempted murder charges after reportedly shooting his estranged wife on Saturday at an Olive Garden parking lot in Jacksonville, NC.
According to court records, he was slated to be in court Monday for violating a domestic protective order. He is also due in court in April on separate charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of drugs.
