Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office investigating death in fire

Posted: Updated:

ANDREWS, SC (WMBF) - The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating the death of a 12-year-old male at a house fire in Andrews, according to a press release issued by the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office.

Georgetown County Deputy Coroner Chase Ridgeway identifies the young boy as Dave S. Coombs. An autopsy will be performed Sunday morning to determine how Coombs died.

The release states, at approximately 1:30 a.m. on March 29 Georgetown County Sheriff's deputies responded to the report of a mobile home fire on James Drive in the Andrews community of Georgetown County.

One victim was discovered in the home.

Those living in the area knew Dave Coombs as "Science," a nickname they say describe his personality as intelligent, inquisitive and respectful.

The release states that according to the family, they recently moved to a new home. The victim attended a birthday party and did not answer calls from his mother. In the process of the investigation, it was determined the victim returned to the house instead of their new home without the family's knowledge.

Police say the case remains under investigation.
