CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – Two men were arrested after allegedly robbing a Scotchman store with a toy gun that was found next to a 5-year-old boy found sleeping in the back seat when they were stopped by police Thursday.

Kelvin Claude Williams, 23 of Aynor, and Marcus Allen Smith, 23, of Conway, were arrested Thursday morning after being stopped by Horry County Police near the robbery location.

At about 6 a.m. on Thursday, Horry County Police responded to an armed robbery complaint at the Scotchman at 510 Highway 544 in Conway, according to the police report. Several other officers reported that they had detained the suspects near Highway 544 and Highway 501.

Officers reviewed the surveillance footage from the store and matched the gun used in the robbery to a toy gun found next to a boy sleeping in the car's back seat, the report states. Officers searched the vehicle and found several articles of clothing that matched those seen in surveillance video, and clear-wrapped rolls of pennies, similar to the rolls used at Scotchman. Three fingerprints were also taken from the scene.

Smith denied any involvement, and offered to prove it by allowing police to search his cell phone. According to the report, the officer found a text message on the phone between the two men, making plans to "hit two stores," along with several other texts sent just before the robbery occurred.

Smith was charged with two counts of armed robbery and one count of unlawful neglect of a child. Williams was charged with two counts of armed robbery, kidnapping, and unlawful neglect of a child. Both were booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a total $15,000 bond.
