SC prisons want mental health ruling reconsidered

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina prison officials are telling a judge why he should reconsider a ruling over how to deal with inmates' mental health treatment.

Circuit Judge Michael Baxley has scheduled a hearing for Friday on the request by the state Department of Corrections.

Earlier this year, Baxley sided with inmates who sued the agency. He issued a ruling that castigated the Corrections Department for failures in a number of areas - from screening new inmates for mental health problems to properly administering medication and preventing suicide.

Corrections officials say Baxley's order didn't address a number of the department's defenses. The agency also says they've made a number of fixes over the years in how inmate mental health is handled.
