CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – Mock trial teams from two Grand Strand middle schools are heading to Conway to compete in the Battle of the Carolinas Middle School Mock Trial Competition later this month.
Forestbrook Middle School won the 2013 South Carolina competition, and Ocean Bay Middle School was the first runner up. They will join Dent Middle School and Dutch Fork Middle School to compete against North Carolina's top four teams.
Below is a news release from the South Carolina Bar Association with more details on the upcoming competition:
COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 25, 2013)—Four South Carolina middle schools and four North Carolina middle schools will compete in the inaugural Battle of the Carolinas Middle School Mock Trial Competition March 28-29, at the Horry County Government and Justice Center located at 1301 Second Ave. in Conway.
The top four teams from the 2013 S.C. Bar Middle School Mock Trial State Competition—Forestbrook Middle School (winner), Ocean Bay Middle School (first runner-up), Dent Middle School and Dutch Fork Middle School—will compete against North Carolina's top four teams: Ridge Road Middle School, McDougle Middle School, The Academy at Lincoln and Wayne School of Engineering.
Students will present the plaintiff and defense sides of a fictitious case before a panel of local volunteer lawyers and judges. Additionally, students will fill the roles of defendant, witnesses, bailiffs and timekeepers. Each team will be judged on its presentation skills, rather than the legal merits of the case.
Teams will use the same case that was used in their respective 2013 regional and state mock trial competitions. This year's fictitious case is Sidney Curie v. Petzicon Products, Inc. Curie, the owner of an award-winning West Highland Terrier, is suing Petzicon for the manufacture and sale of its flea treatment, FleaX, after Curie's dog died following its use. Petzicon denies the allegations, claiming the death was caused by Curie's improper application of the flea treatment.
The Battle of the Carolinas Middle School Mock Trial Competition is a project between the S.C. Bar and the N.C. Bar Association Foundation. The program is supported by the S.C. Bar Law Related Education Division, S.C. Bar Foundation, N.C. Law Related Education Division and N.C. Bar Association Foundation.
