BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) – An inmate at a Bennettsville correctional facility has been charged with voluntary manslaughter after striking another inmate in the head with a broom during a fight, authorities stated.
William Kennedy Robertson, 31, has been charged with voluntary manslaughter in the death of Theodore Evans, both inmates at the Evans Correctional Institution in Bennettsville, according to a news release from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
The release states that Evans died after a fight at the facility in January 2014, in which he was struck with a broom by Robertson, causing Evans to fall backwards and hit his head on the wall and toilet in their cell.
According to jail records, Robertson was originally incarcerated in 2007 for producing marijuana and armed robbery in Greenville County. He was projected to be released in December 2015.
Robertson would face a penalty of two to 30 years in prison if convicted, SLED officials stated. The case will be prosecuted by the Fourth Circuit Solicitor's Office.
