MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – With the deadline to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act nearing, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is hosting an open house event Tuesday.
Representatives from BlueCross BlueShield will be at the Hilton Garden Inn at Coastal Grand Mall, 2383 Coastal Grand Circle, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday to provide answers and enroll individuals and businesses ahead of the deadline.
Under the ACA, those who haven't registered for an insurance plan by March 31 will face a federal penalty of 1 percent of their income or $95, whichever is greater. The penalty will increase incrementally over several years.
The free open house will include giveaway items and chance to take home an iPad. Local independent agents will be there to answer questions, determine if a person is eligible for a federal subsidy, and enroll people for a policy that would comply with the ACA. Agents will represent health plans from the BlueCross and BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina.
"We encourage people to sign up to avoid the federal tax penalty. Health insurance is complex and we want them to be able to ask all their questions and get answers to help them find the right plan for them and their families," said Chuck Campbell, BlueCross vice president of agency sales.
