City of NMB warns of fake 'Geek Squad' calls

Posted: Updated:

From the City of North Myrtle Beach:

Some North Myrtle Beach residents have received phone calls from an unknown male who states that he is from the "Geek Squad." (Best Buy has a team known as the Geek Squad that, at the request of a customer, will visit homes to make computer repairs, but Best Buy is not associated with this scam.) The caller tells the resident that there is a problem associated with Windows 7 in their computer and that it needs to be corrected immediately. He directs the resident to log on to their computer immediately and follow his instructions so that he can correct the problem. In these instances, the residents did not log on to their computers and ended the call.

One of the telephone numbers used in this scam was (278) 567-1207. The caller was a male.

The obvious danger here is that, if someone does follow the caller's instruction to log on to their computer and follows the caller's additional instructions, personal bank account, credit card, email addresses and content, and more will be placed at risk.
