HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A Longs woman was arrested Tuesday after she admitted that she beat a 10-year-old child in her custody with a stick wrapped in leather, and removed the child's mattress as punishment, allegedly for stealing a cookie from school, according to a police report.

According to jail records, 30-year-old Jennifer Renee Daniell was arrested March 18 and charged with cruelty to children.

On March 17, police responded to a complaint of possible child abuse, and saw the victim had bruising and welts from his waist down to his knee on both thighs, according to the HCPD report. The victim told police that Daniell, who has custody, beat him on March 14 after he got in trouble at school for stealing a cookie.

The child told police that Daniell also took some of his meals away and removed his mattress, the police report states. He was put in Emergency Protective Custody and placed with a foster parent.

Daniell came to the school and admitted to hitting the child with a wooden stick wrapped in leather, and said her father used the same type of device on her growing up, the report states. She denied taking food from the victim, but did admit to taking the mattress as punishment.

A police officer and a Department of Social Services agent conducted a follow-up at Daniell's home, and completed a safety plan for the remaining children, allowing them to stay in the home.

Daniell was released from jail on March 18 on a $2,500 bond, according to jail records.
